December is right around the corner and so begins holiday parties
for work, church, and family gathering. If your baby bump is starting to show
and this is your first big get together since you've been pregnant get ready
for lots of attention and possible "genie rubs". Genie rubs are what
I call it when family, friends, and strangers come up and ask (or not) to rub
that cute baby bump.
I always found it humorous when anyone would rub my belly,
because it was if they were secretly making a wish. When I was pregnant with my
first (11 years ago) that’s when I started calling anyone who rubbed my belly a
“genie rub.”
Is there some wives’ tale, that I’m not aware of, that suggests it
brings good luck or something to rub a pregnant women’s belly? I would get complete strangers coming up
asking (or not) if they could “touch” my belly. It didn't bother me, because I
knew they wanted whatever good luck they could get. They would rub my belly as
they asked me questions about my pregnancy and the whole while I’m just
thinking, ‘okay, does this person think they’re going to pull the lucky lotto
numbers today?’
So, you have been warned! If the idea of anyone touching your
belly freaks you out, no worries, there are always simple solutions to
preventing too much of the genie rubbing this Holiday
season or anytime. You could come up with some witty excuse as to why
they wouldn't want to touch your belly. “Ooo,
I wouldn't do that if I were you, didn't you know it’s bad
luck?” Or find a cute maternity shirt that reads something like, “Please don’t
touch precious cargo growing inside.”
But, if you're like me and it doesn't bother you to have
people rubbing your belly or if you thing maybe it will bring good luck to you
and your baby, than go with the flow, enjoy all the attention and genie rubs
you’ll be getting while pregnant and especially during the holidays.
